How to find a supplier in China when you only have a product idea

Prepare a short specification

You do not need a lengthy document. Start with a photograph or link, approximate quantity, dimensions, materials, packaging requirements and your preferred deadline. If the product will be sold in a particular country, mention that in advance: labelling and documentation requirements depend on the product category and market.

The more precise your starting information, the easier it is to compare offers. Similar-looking products can differ in composition, included accessories, fittings and production terms. A low price alone does not mean you will receive an equivalent product.

Clarify who is making the offer

You may be speaking with a manufacturer, trading company or intermediary. A trading company can be a useful option for mixed products or a small order. Understand the counterparty’s role and agree who is responsible for fulfilling the obligations.

Before paying, request the company’s registration information and clarify its production capabilities and transaction terms. One source of registration information for mainland Chinese companies is the official GSXT system: https://www.gsxt.gov.cn/ . Registry information helps you understand the counterparty, but does not by itself guarantee product quality or transaction security.

Do not skip the sample

Discuss whether the sample represents the future batch, how changes will be recorded and who pays for sample delivery. Compare offers on the order contents, timelines, packaging and agreed delivery terms as well as price.
